How to Verify a Seller Before Buying
Published on January 28, 2026
Before you send any money or meet a seller, spend 10 minutes verifying them. It's the single best way to avoid fraud.
1. Call the Phone Number
Texting alone isn't enough. Call and speak to the seller. Things to notice:
- Do they answer questions confidently?
- Is the voice consistent with the listing?
- Any hesitation or vagueness?
- Do they speak the local language well? (or is it a different region?)
2. Reverse Image Search
Copy the listing photos and search them on Google Images. If the same photos appear on multiple listings, they may be stolen.
3. Check Other Listings
A reputable seller usually has multiple listings with similar quality. Red flags:
- Only one listing
- Listings in far-apart cities
- Different product categories that don't fit
- Prices way below market
4. Ask for CNIC
For high-value items (cars, property, expensive electronics), ask to see the CNIC in person. Match the name to:
- Registration documents
- Bank account
- Vehicle registration (if car)
5. Verify Business Registration
If the seller claims to be a business:
- Ask for NTN (National Tax Number)
- Verify on FBR website
- Check business name matches
- Visit their office if possible
6. Ask for References
For high-value deals:
- Ask for past customer references
- Call and verify
- Check if reference matches the seller's story
7. Search Their Name/Number Online
Google their phone number and name. Look for:
- Complaints on forums
- Previous scam reports
- Positive reviews
- Social media presence
8. Check Social Media
- Does the seller have a real Facebook/LinkedIn profile?
- Is it old and active?
- Are there mutual connections?
- Do photos match the CNIC name?
9. Test Communication
- Do they respond promptly?
- Do they answer all questions?
- Do they avoid pushing you to hurry?
- Do they accept inspection before payment?
10. Trust Patterns, Not Just Words
Scammers follow patterns:
- Urgency ("It'll sell today if you don't buy")
- Advance payment demand
- Refusal to meet in public
- Vague answers about item history
- Requests to move conversation off platform
Legitimate sellers are patient, clear, and never rush you.
Red Flags That Mean "Walk Away"
- Won't share CNIC
- Won't meet in person
- Demands advance payment
- Price far below market
- Uses only text (no calls)
- Different phone numbers for different messages
- Photos look stolen
- Refuses inspection
- Insists on out-of-platform communication
Final Advice
Verification takes 10 minutes. Fraud can cost you months of savings. Always take the time to verify.
If any single red flag appears, stop and reconsider. There's always another seller.
