Safe Online Transactions: Complete Guide
Published on January 26, 2026
Online transactions in Pakistan have grown rapidly. But so has fraud. Here's how to keep your money safe.
1. Cash on Delivery is Safest
For any transaction, cash on delivery (COD) is the safest method. You pay only when you receive and inspect the item.
Never pay in advance for something you haven't seen.
2. Use Bank Transfers for Large Amounts
For high-value items, use bank transfer instead of cash:
- IBFT (Inter-Bank Funds Transfer) — instant, traceable
- Bank draft — secure, verifiable
- Raast — Pakistan's instant payment system
Bank transfers leave a paper trail and can be reversed in case of fraud.
3. Avoid These Payment Methods
- Gift cards: No trace, no refund
- Cryptocurrency: Anonymous, irreversible
- Direct cash for high amounts: Unsafe, no proof
- Third-party payment apps: Unless well-known and trusted
4. Beware of Payment Scams
Common tricks:
- Fake SMS: Pretends to be from your bank confirming payment
- OTP theft: Scammer asks for OTP "to verify" — never share
- Reversed transfers: Transfer shows as pending, then bounces
- Fake screenshots: Shows a "successful transfer" that never happened
Always verify payment in your own bank app, never trust screenshots.
5. Meet in Safe Locations
- Banks (during business hours)
- Police station parking lots
- Large shopping malls
- Busy market areas
- Public cafes
Never meet at:
- Isolated warehouses
- Empty parking lots
- Someone's home (for first meeting)
- Unknown remote locations
6. Verify Before Paying
- Inspect item thoroughly
- Test all functions
- Check documents
- Verify seller identity
- Get written receipt
7. Keep Records
For every transaction, keep:
- Screenshots of the listing
- Chat history with the seller
- Payment proof
- Receipt signed by seller
- Photos of item received
8. Handle Disputes Correctly
If something goes wrong:
- Contact the seller first
- Report to the platform
- File police complaint (for high-value fraud)
- Report to cybercrime if online
Pakistan's FIA Cybercrime wing handles online fraud cases.
9. Trust Your Instincts
If a deal feels wrong, walk away. Lost deals are recoverable. Lost money often isn't.
10. Teach Others
Share these tips with friends and family. The more people know, the harder it is for scammers.
Final Thoughts
Safe online transactions come down to three rules: verify before paying, meet in public places, keep records. Follow these and you'll avoid almost all scams.
